The event is hosted by the Arizona Small Business Development Center Network (AZSBDC) and scheduled to take place from 11:30 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. on the House Lawn of the Arizona State Capitol Complex, 1700 W. Washington Street in Phoenix. Arizona Capitol Times publisher Ginger Lamb will serve as emcee of the event, which is expected to attract more than 300 guests, including members of the Arizona Legislature and  government, business and community leaders from across the state.

“The Success Awards provide an annual opportunity to recognize and applaud the achievements of Arizona small businesses,” AZSBDC State Director Janice Washington said. “The winners represents a wide range of industries and come from every part of this state. Their accomplishments are impressive, given the continuing challenges of the national and global economies.”

Best Finishing, Inc. of Tucson was chosen as the 2012 Master Award Winner because of owner Christine Schlesinger’s ability to identify and fulfill an important market need in an industry where the needs of customers had always taken a backseat to distribution strategies. “Christine rewrote the book on selling and serving finishing product customers in a sector that had always been manufacturer driven,” explained Washington. “Her dedication to providing customer solutions was a real game changer for her company.”

Success Award winners worked with an AZSBDC Network Center to achieve their goals and are chosen for their outstanding economic performance during the previous year (2011). “Each winner’s story is a good example of how the AZSBDC Network is helping Arizona businesses succeed,” said Washington. “We are a very strong Network with statewide reach.”

The AZSBDC Network is Arizona’s largest and most accessible source of assistance for small business, with 28 locations across Arizona, including 11 Service Centers and 17 satellites and/or meeting sites. The Network recently also became the host of the new Arizona Procurement Technical Assistance Center (AZPTAC) network, which is headquartered in Glendale and has satellite locations in Mesa, Tucson and Yuma.

During 2011, the Network counseled 3,128 clients and helped create or retain 1,647 jobs. AZSBDC clients started 268 new businesses last year. They created capital investment totalling $45 million. These companies collectively increased their sales by $85.1 million.

A map of all Network locations, including the new AZPTAC sites, can be found online at www.azsbdc.net.

The AZSBDC Network is funded through a cooperative agreement with the U. S. Small Business Administration and through host agreements with 10 Arizona community colleges and Tucson’s Microbusiness Advancement Center.

Friends of Small Business Advisory Board Celebrates 15 Years

Thursday, December 1st, 2011

The Arizona Small Business Development Center Network’s Friends of Small Business Advisory Board (FOSB) marked its 15th anniversary with a November 30 reception at Tempe Center for the Arts. Current and former members of the board — including several founding members — were recognized for their leadership and advocacy on behalf of Arizona small businesses.

Founder Mary Lou Bessette received a special recognition for her efforts in organizing what quickly became a model for similar efforts in other states. Founded in 1996, FOSB was recognized by the U.S. Small Business Administration in 1998 at the National Vision 2000 Conference hosted by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce.

Arizona’s Advisory Board concept was also presented at national conferences as a small business development center best practice.

The Friends of Small Business Advisory Board is a statewide board of accomplished business leaders that advises the AZSBDC Network on its program of work. The Board includes up to 25 Arizona small business champions — accomplished business executives, administrators and government officials who support, train, educate and applaud the efforts of small business owners who are striving to create economic success.

More than 60 Arizona business and community leaders have served as members of FOSB since its inception. The AZSBDC Network thanks each of them for their assistance and for their tireless commitment to the Arizona small business community

Arizona State Star To Be Honored at ASBDC National Conference Sept. 6

Tuesday, September 6th, 2011

The Arizona Small Business Development Center Network (AZSBDC) recognized its top performers at a recent statewide meeting held in Flagstaff.

Maricopa Community Colleges SBDC Business Analyst Linda Koenes was named Arizona State Star, based on her outstanding performance in achieving the highest combined levels of economic impact and client satisfaction in the state. The AZSBDC measures economic impact in areas including job creation and retention, business starts, sales increases and capital formation.

The honor made Koenes a two-time State Star winner with awards from two state networks. She joined the Maricopa SBDC in 2009 after five years of service with the Washington State Small Business Development Network. Koenes was named Washington State Star in 2006.

Koenes will be honored in a September 6 ceremony recognizing State Stars at the Association of Small Business Development Centers (ASBDC) national conference in San Diego this week. The ASBDC represents 63 SBDC networks across the United States.

“It’s clear that Linda is highly committed to the success of small business owners,” AZSBDC State Director Janice Washington said. “She is a strong contributor to the success of the SBDC program in Arizona.”

U.S. Small Business Administration Arizona District Director Robert Blaney and Friends of Small Business Advisory Board member Joy Staveley were on hand to help Washington present the award to Koenes and to other category winners.

Success Award Client Wins SBA Award

Monday, May 2nd, 2011

In 2010, Hollis Cinema 4 in Globe was honored as an AZSBDC Success Awards winner. On May 5, the Hollis family business will be recognized again — this time as the recipient of the Jeffrey Butland Family-Owned Business of the Year award at the 2011 U.S. Small Business Administration Awards for Arizona. The SBA awards celebrate and recognize small business entrepreneurs and champions from across the state. They will be held as part of the 18th Annual Enterprise Business Awards Luncheon at the Arizona Biltmore.

Hollis Cinema 4 owners Bob and Susie Hollis worked with Gila Community College SBDC Center Director Ron Nielsen to write the 90-page business plan that made it possible to obtain financing for the reborn theater project in 2009. An SBA loan was part of the original capitalization.

The Enterprise Business Awards Luncheon will be held on May 5 at 11 a.m. Tickets are available through the Arizona Small Business Association (connect HERE), which is hosting the event. The AZSBDC Network is proud to have assocations with winners in three categories this year! Other winners include the Arizona Western College SBDC as the Small Business Development Center of the Year and Microbusiness Advancement Center Executive Director Debbie Chandler, who is the host of our Microbusiness Advancement Center SBDC in Tucson and the winner of the SBA’s Women in Business Champion of the Year award.

Congratulations to all!
